Nottingham is a particularly historic city, with an interesting past and a number of excellent museums, many of which are extremely close to Nottingham Castle.
Amongst the city's most popular museums are The Brewhouse Yard, and the Museum of Costume and Textiles, both of which feature a number of old and well-preserved period cottages.
The Galleries of Justice also come highly recommended and is an informal and fun museum, set in grand surroundings. Here are Nottingham's main museums.

The Brewhouse Yard Museum offers the chance to take a trip back to times gone by, with a host of in-depth information about Nottingham spanning more than 300 years. Housed in five authentic 17th-century cottages and gardens, you have the opportunity to experience first-hand how people lived in this city many years ago. The Brewhouse Yard Museum stands just beneath the castle itself and also features a period Victorian home.

Organised as a series of period rooms, the Museum of Costume and Textiles features a large collection of historic costumes, dating from the end of the 18th century, right up to the 1950s. The museum is also home to a number of colourful tapestries and lace work, and can be found in a row of cottages, which were built in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Located on the High Pavement, the Galleries of Justice can be found in the magnificent Shire Hall building and takes you on an interesting journey through the history of Nottingham's judicial system. With displays detailing the gruesome medieval punishments inflicted to those found breaking the law, this is an extremely interactive museum. You are led around the exhibits by either costumed 'jailers' or one of the 'prisoners', and end up in a Victorian courtroom, in front of a judge.
